From April 15 to June 4, 1989, a series of protests took place in Beijing on Tiananmen Square, with students as the main participants. Early on the morning of June 4, at the decision of the country’s political leadership, the protests were suppressed by the People’s Liberation Army of China using firearms and armored vehicles. Estimates of the number of casualties range from several hundred to several thousand, with thousands more wounded[1][2]. The crackdown is known as the "June 4 events" in China and the "Tiananmen Square Massacre" in the West.
